The word "firefox" has been pushed around in web browsers, movies,
company names, and other places. So I wondered whether it comes from
some earlier legend or colloquialism. And even after restricting my
Google search I'm still swamped by mostly pages about the browser.

Interesting photo of a Firefox crop circle, though.

Anyone know where the word came from?

The browser Firefox started out being called Phoenix (but they had to
change that to avoid copyright infringement on some other software),
they changed to Firebird, but had the same problem (another software
company already used the name). Finally they settled on Firefox.

The Fire Fox is an alternative name for the Red Panda, based on the
translation from the Chinese. This link will take you to a google
search on Fire Fox and Red Panda.

Ah, thanks! Cute little things, aren't they?

I remember seeing a red panda at the zoo and immediately thought they
must be Chinese raccoons. But the description on the zoo plaque didn't
suggest the reliance on bamboo that the Wikipedia article did.
